Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi earlier wrote:
The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer. Pending its finalization, the media should refrain from entering speculation about its content.
In line with our responsible and transparent approach, all details will be shared with the public in due course.
Trump was earlier ticked off about a leak of the terms of the deal that he said was fake. He seems to be happy that Araghchi walked it back.
Axios also reports that Trump said that Iran secretly apologized regarding the dissemination of false news about the agreement and that he still thinks a deal could be signed over the weekend or on Monday.
Separately, the Pakistani PM says the final text of the peace agreement has been prepared. The implication is that ‘final’ means that it’s agreed on but not yet signed.
Update: Now there are comments on Reuters from a ‘senior US administration official’ who says:
- The Iran deal accomplishes core US objectives
- Deal reopens Strait of Hormuz
- US to get enriched material
- Iran deal guarantees long-term peace in region
- Iran deal includes inspection regime
- If Iran complies it will be rewarded economically
- Benefits for Iran accrue if they actually deliver
- US expect to sign in the next ‘few’ days
- Draft agreement also lifts US blockade and leads to dismantlement of Iran nuclear program
- Iranians don’t get anything upon signing agreement
- Not quite at the finish line but very close
- Deal is specific about opening Strait, lifting blockade and moving of enriched material
- The more Iranians perform, the more they can get
- There will be significant sanctions relief based on how Iran performs
